The two units to be erected on Belene NPP Site are of A-92 design with pressurized water reactor (PWR), with 1000 MW electric power. The design features contemporary control and safety systems and has been developed so as to ensure reliable operation with minimum impact on the environment under any conditions, including cases of hypothetic accidents.
The selection and development of Belene NPP design has been based on the:

  • Basic safety principles for NPP – INSAG 12, developed by an international advisory group of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • IAEA requirements to the quality management systems in NPP construction
  • Requirements of the European utility organizations for the technical and safety features of 3rd generation NPPs
  • Application of the internationally accepted terms and conditions for implementation of turnkey project contracts – FIDIC
  • Requirements of the Bulgarian national safety norms
