Location: Belene NPP site is situated in the lowlands of Svishtov and Belene, on the bank of the Danube river, in its lower course at the 571st kilometer, opposite Persin (Belene) Island - the biggest island in the river. It is a flat country - +20.0 ì. above the sea level. An embankment rising at elevation +25.5 m protects the site from the river waters. Belene NPP site is 7.5 km away from the Romanian border, 5km away from the town of Belene and 12 km away from the town of Svishtov. It spreads on an area of 210 hectares which are part of the territories of Belene and Svishtov municipalities.


Climate: The climate in the region is of the temperate-continental type. Southwest oriented winds - 28%, as well as northeastern– 23% and western winds - 21% are predominant in the region. Days without wind – 45%, absolute air humidity of 18,1hPa and average annual humidity of 73% characterise the climate here.


The Municipality of Belene is located in the lowlands of the same name, in the northeast part of the Danube plain next to the Danube river and covers a territory of 28 505 hectares. It comprises six towns and villages with total population of 11 445 people, 9 388 of which live in the town of Belene. On the west it shares a border with the municipality of Nikopol, on the east – with the municipality of Svishtov, on the south – with the municipality of Levski. Belene town is 58 km away from the regional center Pleven –and 27km away from Svishtov.


The Municipality of Svishtov is the northernmost part of Veliko Tarnovo District. Svishtov town is situated on the right bank of the Danube, in its lower course at the 554th kilometer. The southmost point of the river is also here (430 and 37' northern latitude).The municipality covers a territory of 624 square kilometers. It comprises sixteen towns and villages with total population of 50 125 people, 32 491 of which live in the town of Svishtov.


The main landmark in the vicinity of Belene NPP site is Nature Park "Persina" which covers an area of 21 762,2 hectares. Protection of the endangered species and plants in the park was considered in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report for Belene NPP. With its decision ¹ 18-8/2004 on the BNPP EIA Report the Ministry of Environment and Water stipulated 50 conditions compulsory for the investor throughout all the three stages of the project: design, construction and operation. Thus the environmental protection is completely guaranteed, as well as human health.
