NEK is the national electric company of Bulgaria and is a 100% state-owned single-owner joint-stock company. Its seat of business is in Sofia. NEK generates electricity at HPP and PSHPP, provides power transmission services and trades in electricity at the national and international markets. The annual traded volume of electricity is 32,000 GWh. NEK is one of the biggest exporters of electricity in the Balkan region. In 2007, the company exported on commercial terms 4461 GWh.

NEK is the owner of the power transmission network in the country, and owns and operates 29 hydro power plants with a total capacity of 2563 MW.
